Setbacks are sometimes very tough to deal with and can cause negative feelings to arise. We can get the feeling that we can not make it and that the setback was a reality check as to the wrong path we are really on, which this can sometimes be true. But many times setbacks are only those situations in which we can utilize to propel us forward, it all depends on how we view them.
“For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity.” (Proverbs 24:16 NKJV).
There are two ways in which you can view setbacks and both are true in their own respect. You can either choose to look at the setback as a sign of negative consequence or you can view it as a means by which you propel further forward than before. Setbacks are only a fancy term for falling a bit short or stumbling for a moment, if you will.
Typically when someone stumbles while walking they stumble forward, rarely the other way. This is true when stumbling on the path of life. When we stumble many times it is God trying to help us move forward instead of backwards. Now believe me I know there are times of stumbling because we are on the wrong path and that is more predicated upon what it is that you are pursuing, and where you feel the Lord calling you.
If you feel like the Lord has been calling you to a particular area and you continue to have setbacks, it might mean you need to take a moment in prayer and really look over how you are approaching the path. Sometimes it is a sign that you need to reevaluate your approach to the area of calling. A great example of this is my professional motocross career and the many setbacks I had over the years. Looking back I can see that the setbacks were not God telling me to abandon this area, but rather approach it differently with a new attitude of enthusiasm and work ethic. God may be telling you the same at the moment.
It is up to us to stay close enough to the Lord to sense what certain setbacks mean and what He is trying to tell us through them. Sometimes setbacks are only a means of ending one opportunity to allow another, greater opportunity to rise in its place. I have seen many people struggle with setbacks and think of the doom that awaits them only to find a greater opportunity arise instead. God loves us and does not wish to lead us to misery, but instead hope and joy with the intent of prospering us to ultimately glorify Him.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Proverbs 29:11).
In dealing with setbacks we must also change our view of God. We must let go of the idea that He is out to get us and to punish us the first mistake we make, this is more the devil than God. God is our loving Father who wants the best for us and all we need to do is simply trust and move. We need to have the view that God is for us and not against us.
“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:11).
Changing our view of God will help change our view of setbacks. Knowing that God is for us then surely there are no setbacks that will work against us! No matter where you are today know that God is for you and that He loves you. Continue to move forward in faith and in His Spirit with a heart filled with prayer. He waits for us to fully trust in Him and know that He is good in order to use the setbacks and to open new doors of opportunity. Only trust, believe and continue moving forward in faith. God bless!
