There is a problem with a lot of the church and missionary thinking of today as most believe that we somehow can save people. This thought and theology is not biblical as we can not save anyone, we can only plant seeds. Jesus is who saves, the Holy Spirit is who presses upon the individual the need to give their life to the Lord. We are only vessels in which the Lord uses to accomplishes His will, nothing more or less.
“And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” (Mark 16:15-16 NKJV).
We are called to go into all the world and make disciples of the nations, and yet this can only be accomplished by the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. It absolutely disgust me when people say, “Sell your faith” or “Persuade people to convert.” What heresy! We should never try and sell our faith, or persuade people into converting as then they are not truly saved as it was not the work of the Holy Spirit, but rather mere convincing of a faith salesman or woman; God forbid.
Jesus said we are the branches and He is the vine, and we can do nothing apart from Him. When He brings people into our lives to preach the gospel to we need to make sure we are in tuned with the Spirit and allowing Him to speak through us, and not our own selves interfering. We want the Holy Spirit to touch their hearts and minds in such a way that He converts them into true salvation through Jesus Christ.
Today we have gotten into the numbers problem where we want to try and save as many people as possible, and yet many times this leads to our own works instead of the work of the Spirit. God wants quality rather than quantity. Do not get me wrong, the good Lord wants all to obtain salvation, but in order to obtain salvation they must experience the conviction of the Holy Spirit, and not our own persuading words.
“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building.” (1 Corinthians 3:6-9).
Another thing we must keep in mind is the fact that we are called to plant seeds and typically seeds, as we see in nature, take time to grow with the watering of the word and Holy Spirit. This is why it is so important for us to preach with the power of the Holy Spirit working in and through our lives in order to truly penetrate the filth that the world has clouded over the lost. No words of man are able to accomplish this, but rather the power of God and His word and Spirit are able.
Starting now we should all be seeking to plant seeds in all those that the good Lord brings our way by the power of the Holy Spirit. God will grow the seeds into fruitful trees in due time as we continue to live and walk in His Spirit, accomplishing His will for our lives. Each person that God brings your way, remember to rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance and pray that He speaks through you as a good vessel of God. When we approach preaching this way, we then bring true salvation to the lost as the Spirit moves within their hearts and minds towards the cleansing power of the blood of Christ and eternal salvation in the One that can give it.
