Distractions fill the space around us on a constant basis, whether it be phones, tablets, TV, people, etc. We are bombarded everyday with things and people that either can distract us or purposely try to. Our job is to discipline ourselves to look past the distractions and look forward to God. When we set our eyes ahead on Him, we then can fully overcome the distractions and ultimately excel to where we need to be and in what we are called to do.
“Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil.” (Proverbs 4:25-27 NKJV)
In my personal experience the biggest distraction of them all is people, especially family. Whether we realize it or not, family has a big impact on most of us and their thoughts and opinions affect us the most out of anyone. When your family says you can not do something or acts like you are stupid, then there is a good chance you will continue to live in the bubble they created for you.
The thing I learned over the years and the key at this point is to learn to shut out their voices and tune into God’s voice. Our family and friends voices only matter from time to time as the Lord does use them, but God’s voice and His word matter all the time. When we still ourselves and listen to His voice being pressed upon our hearts and minds and we meditate upon His word, we find out that we are not stupid and that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
“Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14)
If you feel God calling you to pursue something and your family or friends are telling you that you can not do it, go ahead and tune them out and listen for God’s voice. Open up your Bible and read His word and see what He speaks to you and reveals to you. We are called to be more than the voices and opinions of people. We are called to be more than the distractions of this world. God has called us to be the light of the world and to pursue His will in order to bring Him glory and good pleasure. We are children of an awesome God, so let’s start living like one and look past the distractions onto the Sustainer of all things.
