There are many who would rather not do anything or say anything about Jesus, but would instead just keep their faith to themselves and just be the best person they can be. This type of ideology has been around for quite some time now, but has really elevated and became popular in the 1950’s and continues to grow today with the talk of offending people and keeping politics and religion out of conversations. And yet what did Jesus say about this?
“Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”
John 15:2 NKJV
Producing fruit for the Lord is a part of our walk with Him. If we go through this life keeping silent and doing nothing then we have become a lazy servant, a fruitless branch to be burned up. We are not called to be silent, but to proclaim the gospel to every creature and make disciples.
Many Christians say that the most important thing is to just have faith and be a good person, the goal is to get to heaven anyways, right? The first part is true we need to have faith and faith is what saves us, but as James states in his epistle, “faith without works is dead.” So are we if we do not have our faith and works working together through the power of the Holy Spirit.
“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”
James 2:26 NKJV
The second part of the statement above is false, the main goal is not just to get to heaven, but rather to have a personal relationship with the Lord and to dwell with Him forever. It is not about getting to heaven and kicking back in freedom from hurts and pains (although that will be the rewarding side), it is about knowing and walking with God through this life onto the next. If it is just heaven your looking for then do not be surprised if Jesus tells you, “But I never knew you, depart from me.”
Now, of course one of the main things I like to point out when speaking about works and producing fruit is that works alone do not save you. You can not work your way to heaven. Second, producing fruit can only be done by the working of the Holy Spirit in and through our lives and can not be done by our own doings. This brings me to the main point that we should not just sign up for a bunch of work within the church thinking that it will please God. But instead we need to pray about where the Lord wants us to be and what He wants us to do for Him. Once we are called and sent then we need to rely heavily upon the working of the Spirit to speak and work through us to accomplish the will of God for our life and to ultimately produce an abundance of fruit for Him. What is God calling you to do today? Is there someone He wants you to talk to about Him? Ask that the Holy Spirit lead you and work through you and watch the miracles happen and the fruit produced before your eyes.
