I have listened to my fair share of Bob Dylan growing up and the phrase, “sink like a stone” within his song the times are a changing. Now this reference was in correlation with his song and how if you do not keep up with the times “You will sink like a stone.” But there is truth within the sinking like a stone when we do not keep our sights set on Jesus. When He leads and we do not keep up we too can find ourselves sinking like a stone when we should be walking on the waves.
“And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?””
Matthew 14:28-31 NKJV
It is quite easy to find ourselves looking at the waves of life crashing around us instead of looking at Jesus. When problems clamor for our attention we tend to focus right on the problem, trying our best to come up with a solution in our finite and carnal mind when in reality it is a spiritual issue, needing a spiritual solution. Only Jesus can help us stay on top of the water and overcome the waves.
Whether it be financial, health, relationship or whatever type of problem, the best and most productive thing to do is give it to God. The more we fight the waves in our own strength and try and stay afloat without focusing on Jesus, the more we sink like a stone with the tunes of Bob Dylan playing in the background. Focus on Jesus and He will keep you up and heal the problems.
What “waves” are you faced with today? Are you struggling with certain issues that seem impossible to overcome? Give them to God and watch as He works miracles in your life in order to lift you up and bring Him glory.
